ABOUT DEB

Watercolor Batik on Mulberry Paper

Deb loves the journey for the next inspiring image and how I can interpret, embellish and re-invent it. She uses her own photography or finds images that inspire her. When Deb chooses an image, she first observes the drama of the light, color, shadow and reflection. Capturing the light is everything!

An Arizona-based artist, A. Debra Reich Schwalm loves the looseness, energetic textures, whimsy and transparency of watercolor batik on paper. Her art is featured in galleries and has numerous won awards.

Growing up in the Midwest, Deb has always found very creative ways to express herself within daily life whether it be home decorating, large mural painting or photography. She has studied and worked in Commercial Art, Graphic Design and has a degree in Web Design. She considers herself to be a self-taught artist and continues to hone her skills.

With watercolor batik with paper, hot wax is used as a resist with watercolor paint. The wax blocks the areas completed with watercolor. The batik process uses Mulberry paper, watercolor paints and melted wax. With this method, there will be unintentional drips of wax and spreading color. These unexpected additions can actually add to the looseness energy of the art.  There may be many layers of wax so your original image is obscured until all the wax is taken out of the paper.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. - Pablo Picasso
